Sixteen-year-old Elli was a small child when the Elders of Kupari chose her to succeed the Valtia, the queen who wields infinitely powerful ice and fire magic. Since then, Elli has lived in the temple, surrounded by luxury and tutored by magical priests, as she prepares for the day when the Valtia perishes and the magic finds a new home in her. Elli is destined to be the most powerful Valtia to ever rule.

But when the queen dies defending the kingdom from invading warriors, the magic doesn’t enter Elli. It’s nowhere to be found.

Disgraced, Elli flees to the outlands, the home of banished criminals—some who would love to see the temple burn with all its priests inside. As she finds her footing in this new world, Elli uncovers devastating new information about the Kupari magic, those who wield it, and the prophecy that foretold her destiny. Torn between the love she has for her people and her growing loyalty to the banished, Elli struggles to understand the true role she was meant to play. But as war looms, she must align with the right side—before the kingdom and its magic are completely destroyed.

I love Sarah Fine’s books, and this one sounds SO GOOD. First off — yes please to the ice & fire magic. Secondly — this kingdom is ruled by a queen who goes off and fights to defend her kingdom. HECK YES. And finally, I am a big fan of this whole type of situation: Torn between the love she has for her people and her growing loyalty to the banished… I am not sure if this series will have any romance (my guess is, hopefully, yes? Sarah’s romances are always so good!), but regardless, I am absolutely not going to miss it.

What book are YOU anxiously awaiting today?

Link me to your WoW post, I’d love to stop by! :)

    • Oooooh, her Of Metal and Wishes duology (Phantom of the Opera retelling) is FANTASTIC, I’d highly recommend it! But a new series is always a good place to start, with a new-to-you author, as well. ^_^

  1. Couldn’t agree more. Everything about this book has me all GIMME. I’ve only read one of Sarah Fine’s books as of today but I am planning on remedying that soon (bah! Plans….). Regardless, this sounds awesome and Elli sounds like a really complex character. Hooray for multidimensional queens! ; )

    • Her Of Metal and Wishes duology is REALLY good (and fairly short!), I’d highly recommend it! I’m so excited for a straight-up fantasy from her. It’s going to be fantastic.

    • Yes! Faces on covers are mostly a ‘miss’ for me, but this one SAYS something, with her real face in the top right and the mask in the bottom left. O_O Love it.
