Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.

Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion—to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.

And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity's ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake.

Soooooo today the book I’m featuring is not YA, which most of my WoW picks usually are. HOWEVER, if you’re a fan of fantasy and steampunk and airships let me just pull you aside for a second and tell you: I’m pretty sure you need this book.

Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files, The Codex Alera) is one of my favorite authors, and when I first heard about Cinder Spires (I think at a signing of his, years ago), I was a goner. He has since called it “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen meets Sherlock meets Hornblower. There are goggles and airships and steam power and bizarre crystal technology and talking cats, who are horrid little bullies.” I mean… I’m just sitting here wondering what more you could possibly add to those lists to make them MORE awesome, and I’m coming up blank.

I could not be more excited for this book if I tried.

(And can I get a “heck yeah” for that airship/goggles/sword/coat-situation happening on the cover because heck yeah.)

What book are YOU anxiously awaiting today?

Link me to your WoW post! I’d love to stop by. :)

  1. I’m cringing right now because I have yet to read Jim Butcher. I feel like such a failure. I do have his books on my tbr shelf, but haven’t gotten my hands on his works yet. That being (shamefully) said, I love, love, LOVE the sound of this one^^ Sherlock, steampunk, talking CATS, swords?! Count. Me. In.

  2. I have read some of Jim Butcher other writings and found them very exciting, though long. I have not heard about this one yet so thanks for the heads up. Nice pick.

  3. Oo, I think I definitely thought this was a sequel in one of his ongoing series, I didn’t realize it was a NEW series! I have been procrastinating catching up with Dresden Files since I’m just so overwhelmed with how many books I need to read for it ;-). A new series of his sounds like a lot of fun since then I could jump right on the bandwagon :D
