Growing up on Forge’s streets has taught Kyra how to stretch a coin. And when that’s not enough, her uncanny ability to scale walls and bypass guards helps her take what she needs. But when the leader of the Assassins Guild offers Kyra a lucrative job, she hesitates. She knows how to get by on her own, and she’s not sure she wants to play by his rules. But he’s persistent—and darkly attractive—and Kyra can’t quite resist his pull.

Tristam of Brancel is a young Palace knight on a mission. After his best friend is brutally murdered by Demon Riders, a clan of vicious warriors who ride bloodthirsty wildcats, Tristam vows to take them down. But as his investigation deepens, he finds his efforts thwarted by a talented thief, one who sneaks past Palace defenses with uncanny ease.

When a fateful raid throws Kyra and Tristam together, the two enemies realize that their best chance at survival—and vengeance—might be to join forces. And as their loyalties are tested to the breaking point, they learn a startling secret about Kyra’s past that threatens to reshape both their lives.

In her arresting debut novel, Livia Blackburne creates a captivating world where intrigue prowls around every corner—and danger is a way of life.

I am positively dying to read this book. 1) It’s straight up YA High Fantasy, which I need more of in my life. 2) I have a thing for everything thief/thieving-crew-related, and also for assassins — this book has bothAnd 3) Tristam and Kyra are enemies who end up working together, which is also a Thing I Love. I just… I need this book!

And as if that’s not enough, the prequel novella, Poison Dance, totally blew me away. The characterizations and the worldbuilding were SO good (already! in a novella! what even!). I’m just so flipping excited to see what Blackburne does with an full-length book to devote to her characters and world. Ugh. So excited.

  1. This sounds like THRONE OF GLASS, so YES. This sounds good (and cool cover)! Also, if you’re such a big fan of fantasy and assassins, WHY HAVEN’T YOU READ THRONE OF GLASS YET?!

    • Ahhhhh, I knowwwwwwww. I just haven’t had the chance! Been way too swamped with other books to pick it up yet. I really really want to though!!

  2. I’m adding so much to my TBR shelf every Wednesday (LOL ^_^), this one included. Thanks for sharing this book. I’m really digging that book summary. Btw, have you read The Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner? Maybe you’ll enjoy reading those amazing books too.

    Here’s My WoW pick :)

  3. I was a bit skeptical at first… It seems like there’s a lot of possible insta-love going on. But I am convinced! Especially if the novella was already so amazing :D Plus, it’s from Disney-Hyperion, and I haven’t ever disliked a book from them.

    • I have zero fear of that happening, honestly. There wasn’t even insta-love in the novella! The NOVELLA! Which was LESS than 80 pages long!

And yes, Disney-Hyperion has ALL THE GOOD BOOKS. I love them so much.

  4. Yey, I so completely agree! I read Poison Dance as well and was floored by how attached I was to these characters after, what, 80 pages? I can’t wait to see what Livia does to my heart with a full novel!

  5. I had never heard of this book before but man thank you SO much for featuring it! This looks RIGHT up my alley too – any kind of high-fantasy is a must have in my books XD I love how mysterious and thrilling this sounds, assassins and fantasy are a win-win right?! I like that the MCs are enemies forced to work together too, I bet they’ll end up having all kinds of chemistry :D Adding this to my tbr shelf straight away – AWESOME pick ^^
