There are whispers of a ghost in the slaughterhouse where sixteen-year-old Wen assists her father in his medical clinic—a ghost who grants wishes to those who need them most. When one of the Noor, men hired as cheap factory labor, humiliates Wen, she makes an impulsive wish of her own, and the Ghost grants it. Brutally.

Guilt-ridden, Wen befriends the Noor, including their outspoken leader, a young man named Melik. At the same time, she is lured by the mystery of the Ghost and learns he has been watching her… for a very long time.

As deadly accidents fuel tensions within the factory, Wen must confront her growing feelings for Melik, who is enraged at the sadistic factory bosses and the prejudice faced by his people at the hand of Wen’s, and her need to appease the Ghost, who is determined to protect her against any threat—real or imagined. She must decide whom she can trust, because as her heart is torn, the factory is exploding around her… and she might go down with it.

I am SO excited for another book by Sarah Fine! Her Guards of the Shadowlands series is great, and I’m also really excited for the conclusion to that series to come out in October. But man! This book sounds ahhhhmazing. Of Metal and Wishes has ghosts, and romance, and class-differences between characters who sound awesome just from the blurb…. and guys. GUYS. It’s a retelling of Phantom of the Opera, set in a “reimagined industrialized Asia” (according to Edelweiss). *_* I mean, are you kidding me??? I’m obsessed with retellings lately, and I adore Phantom of the Opera, so yeah. This is a must-read.

Not to mention–that is one gorgeous cover. Those colors are so soft and pretty, and I could see the frosted areas being matte and the rest all glossy and shiny… Oh man, I need this in hardcover. Anyway… I think this sounds like an amazing book, and so different from Fine’s Shadowlands series. I can’t wait to read it!! Hurry up, August!

What book are YOU anxiously awaiting today?

  1. DUDE. WHAT. Retelling of Phantom of the Opera? I didn’t know I want this in my life, but I DO. I WANT IT A LOT. Also, the MC is Asian (that’s what I’m assuming)? YES PLEASE. We need more MC who are POC.

I loveeeee the font! The way the ‘S’ curls, eek! So pretty! However, the white color for the title doesn’t work with the frosted areas. And I would definitely love to see the book cover printed that way – matte on the frosted areas and glossy on the rest.

    • RIGHT??? I need it in my life so bad.

So, on Edelweiss, it says that there will be frost matte (yessss), and embossing. I’m thinking the title will be embossed? Which would totally work because it would make those lesser-visible areas more prominent. I already see myself lovingly stroking this cover the moment it’s in my grubby little hands (because let’s be honest, I’m totally buying this).

  2. I can’t get over how much I LOVE this cover. It’s SO UNIQUE!

Also, wait what – how did I miss the part on Edelweiss saying that this was a retelling of Phantom of the Opera?!

    • That part’s not even on Edelweiss! :O I was looking at some very early Goodreads reviews and lots of people mention it. I can’t BELIEVE it’s not featured more prominently in the blurb anywhere – I get the feeling it used to be, but was removed maybe? Idek. Huge selling point!

  3. I haven’t read Sanctum yet but it’s on my TBR (I actually planned on waiting for the final installment to come out so I could read them all at once because my patience is nonexistent) as is this one because OH MY GOSH this could not sound more fantastic. Great pick!
