Top Ten Authors Who Deserve More Recognition
Ahhh… This is a hard one for me! I read a lot of books by authors I consider to be pretty well-known, at least within the YA world. But I guess I could make the case that every great author deserves at least a little more recognition than they’ve already gotten, right? So I’ll try to include a few lesser-known authors, but cut me some slack on the more popular ones – this is a list of authors who I think deserve ALL THE RECOGNITION. ;)
I just think more people need to read her Timber Wolves series. The main character is flippin awesome (actually, all the characters are awesome), and this series breaks so many of the expected “YA paranormal” expectations. I almost wish it wasn’t self-published – only because I think that turns a lot of people off to it, when this series is SO much stronger than many more popular, mainstream titles I’ve read.
Her debut, The Art of Wishing, is one of my favorite books this year. Yes, I am putting Ribar’s debut up there in my ‘favorites of 2013’ category, right alongside The 5th Wave. It’s totally different, of course, but I totally adored it. I have to say, though, it makes me a little sad that more people haven’t read it! Guys, GET ON THIS. It’s an adorable mix of contemporary and paranormal and there are GENIES and you should read it.
His Bartimaeus series is freaking amazing. I think it’s pretty popular overall, but it really surprises me that more people I know personally haven’t read it. It’s hilarious and exciting and really fun and totally heart-wrenching. Plus he’s got a Middle Grade series coming out soon that I’m really excited for.
Same reason as Jonathan Stroud. I think her Ascendance Trilogy is generally fairly popular, but I’m surprised how many people I know haven’t read it. Both the first two books are really great fun, and I’m super excited for book 3!!
You’ve probably heard of her, but have you experienced the awesome that is The Archived? And have you SEEN that she’s writing a dark, sort of comic-book-inspired
superhero supervillain book? I am SO excited for that. Her mind is an amazing place and if she keeps coming up with ideas like these she is going to be a force to be reckoned with. Actually, no – she already is.
Single-handedly responsible for rekindling my love for straight-up fantasy (albeit under the YA umbrella). I pretty much gave up high fantasy after “migrating” to YA, and I think that’s the reason I waited so long to read Shadow and Bone. But the world and characters she created in her Grisha series is seriously so incredible. She’s another force to be reckoned with.
Even if you haven’t read her books, you probably follow her on Twitter and know how awesome she is. But if you are one of those people who hasn’t read her books, you should fix that ASAP. She knows how to bring ALL THE FEELS. I dare you to finish book 2 of her Shades of London series without serious feels-induced flailing.
An author who can do no wrong, as far as I’m concerned. His Dresden Files series is one of the few adult series I’ve stuck with since becoming entrenched in otherwise-YA titles, because he is seriously fantastic writing within Urban Fantasy. But another of my favorite series of his is high fantasy – The Codex Alera. He’s also coming out with a STEAMPUNK series, The Cinder Spires, which is going to be freaking amazing. I love him and will recommend any/all of his books to anyone and everyone who will listen.
Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author, so I can’t not include him. He seriously can do no wrong – I haven’t disliked a single book of his, and I don’t think I ever will. Plus, on top of being an all-around awesome writer, he writes a lot. He’s currently working on like 4 series right now. Another Mistborn book, the Rithmatist series, the Reckoners series, and The Stormlight Archive. Give the man a medal. Seriously.
