Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and features weekly top-ten lists! This week it’s…

Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations

I did 7 of my favorites and 3 of my least-favorites… pretty much because I usually at least like movie adaptations, so I don’t have many that I genuinely dislike. ;) So here we go, starting with…

Favorite Adaptations:

The Lord of the Rings (the whole trilogy)

Harry Potter
(The first two are my favorites of the movies.)

The Hunger Games

How to Train Your Dragon
(These are VASTLY different… and I actually like the movie more.)

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

(Again, these are pretty different, but I love them both a LOT)

The Princess Bride

Least favorite adaptations:

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
(I feel like most book fans disliked the movie though… right?)

Ella Enchanted (No. Just… no.)

(To be fair, I don’t like the books either, but I mean…
the movies are in a totally different league)

What did everyone else think of these adaptations?

Let me know in the comments! And be sure to leave a link to your Top Ten post. I’d love to stop by!

  1. We share some of the same ones! I also put Twilight and The Lightning Thief on my “worst” list, although in the case of Percy Jackson, I didn’t find the MOVIE to be bad, just the adaptation. If that even makes sense.

LotR, Hunger Games, Princess Bride, Stardust and Narnia are also on my “good” list. Great minds think alike! :)

    • That completely makes sense about Percy Jackson – I think I would probably like it as a movie, by itself, if I hadn’t read the books. But knowing how much better the books are, and knowing how hard future movies will be, what with all the changes they made, is what makes me not like it. =S Fingers crossed that they go back to the books for the second movie, because they’ll need to if they’re going to make more than 2 movies!

  2. I agree with all your BESTs, though I’ve never read The Princess Bride. This was a hard list for me since I often don’t go see movies if I think they will taint how I feel about the books. Please visit my blog, I am doing a Blogoversary giveaway. Anne@Head Full of Books

  3. The Percy Jackson movie is a disgrace. I hope most fans disliked it and that they actually stick to the plot for the second! Love The Hunger Games and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. How to Train Your Dragon is really cute, but I never actually read the book. I just found out that David Tennant voiced one of the characters which honestly makes the movie that much cooler! :D

    • I agree – I honestly think the cast had/has potential, so I’ve got my fingers AND toes crossed that they go back to books for the second PJO movie. There is a reason the books are so popular and the first movie… wasn’t… =/

LOL omg, David Tennant was the reason I watched HTTYD to begin with, too! I was hoping he’d play a larger role but I think he actually did a few characters’ one-liners. Still it was fun trying to pick out his voice! XD

  4. Wow, I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief listed under the ‘Worst Adaptations’ category on people’s Top Ten Tuesday posts this week. Remind me to avoid that film like the plague.

I really need to make an effort to see How To Train Your Dragon. I still remember all the overwhelmingly positive press that arose when it first came out, and it looks like such a sweet and heart-warming story. I hear the animation is absolutely stunning as well :)

Great list! It was a lot of fun to read :D

  5. Wow, I didn’t even know How To Train Your Dragon was based on a book, now I just feel silly. I feel like I’m the odd one out when it comes to the Ella Enchanted movie, mainly because I saw the movie so many times (it seemed to always be on TV) before reading the book so while they are so very different I did enjoy the movie as well as the book.

  6. I think Twilight & The Lightning Thief are showing up on everyone’s worst lists today. I agree with almost everything here. I just haven’t read all the book versions of these movies to know how they compare. I love both Stardust & How to Train Your Dragon, and still need to read the book. And since I’ve never read Ella Enchanted, I can’t say anything more than it was a very silly, cheesy movie.

  7. I guess I was kind of young when I saw Ella Enchanted and just couldn’t put it to my list of bad adaptations. I have read the book then later on and yes, the film is nothing like it, but I guess I just have a soft spot of it because of nostalgic reasons :)

  8. I love Stardust and The Princess Bride movies. They both made my favorite adaptations. and Percy Jackson and Ella made my “disapppoints” list. I loved the move How to Train Your Dragon but I haven’t read the books.

I don’t hate the Twilight movies. I mean, sometimes the acting is lame, and the special effects aren’t that great either. But they were vrey faithful to the books, and I like that.

  9. I loved watching STARDUST – I really need to check out the book.

Ugh, ELLA ENCHANTED. That film drives me crazy. The book is fabulous, but the film is such a mess.

    Great top ten!

  10. Pretty much adore your entire list! I loved the Stardust movie, but I haven’t had the chance to read the book yet. However, it’s on my TBR! And then Lord of the Rings was a fantastic adaption!

  11. Ella Enchanted was such a travesty. Loved LOTR, though :) I think we had a bunch of titles in common! Great list :) And I really need to read Stardust – plus, I didn’t know How to Train Your Dragon was a book!

    Thanks for sharing :D

  12. YAY for LOTR! Agree! ALL of them were awesome! And the 3rd HP was my favorite. :D I liked the Twilight books personally, so the movies were a huge disappointment. Same for Percy, but I didn’t hate the movie.

    Great list Nikki!

  13. Omg, I’d almost forgotten about that travesty otherwise known as Ella Enchanted the Movie. Ella enchanted was one of my favorite books when I was younger (still is, actually) and I remember that I was SO excited for the movie. Went to it all happy and excited and then I was just like WHAT. ugh.

Ohh loved the Stardust movie adaptation. Different but still totally awesome. =)
