!! Some spoilers for previous books in this synopsis!!

War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it, with the East as his ally and the empire as his enemy. He’s finally managed to dismiss the memory of Kestrel, even if he can’t quite forget her. Kestrel turned into someone he could no longer recognize: someone who cared more for the empire than for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she cared for him. At least, that’s what he thinks.

But far north lies a work camp where Kestrel is a prisoner. Can she manage to escape before she loses herself? As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover unexpected roles in battle, terrible secrets, and a fragile hope. The world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and Kestrel and Arin are caught between. In a game like this, can anybody really win?

Why I’m Waiting

I think the pertinent question here is: If you’re not waiting on this book, why?? Have you not read this series yet? Because if that’s the case… look at your life, look at your choices. This series is AMAZING, and if you like romance and fantasy, you need to read it. Immediately. And then join me in simultaneously NEEDING and FEARING this final installment becuase if Kestrel and Arin don’t end up deliciously and deliriously happy at the end, I will not be okay.

Also, Heck Yes and a heartfelt THANK YOU to Macmillan, who (though they’re still changing the paperback covers) are planning to release this final hardcover to match the original two. ❤️⚔🌹

WhyImWaiting_v2

ALADDIN. RETELLING. THE GENIE/JINNI IS A GIRL.

…Sorry, I got distracted there, did you say something? ;) I’ve been wanting a great Aladdin retelling for a while now, and this one sounds SO GOOD. I have to be honest and say that the other two books I’ve read by Jessica Khoury weren’t really my thing, but since this one is definitely a genre I love, I’m really really hoping it’s the book for me!

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman… and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expected—beautiful, fierce, and unstoppable—and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsman—who she likes far more than she should—Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isn’t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

WhyImWaiting_v2

I am sooooo very much not over retellings yet, guys. I can’t get enough of them. I haven’t read anything by C.J. Redwine yet, but The Shadow Queen sounds right up my alley — a darker Snow White retelling with a complicated (hahaha understatement) romance, an intense plot, and what sounds like an awesome fantasy world. What more could one ask for?!

(I do have this one as an eARC thanks to Edelweiss, but the wait to jump into it is EXCRUCIATING!!)

* Some spoilers for Book 1, The Storyspinner, in synopsis! *

Johanna and Rafi are in a race against time to save their country before a power-mad Keeper destroys everything they hold dear in the “enthralling magical world” (Cinda Williams Chima, author of The Heir Chronicles) introduced in The Storyspinner.

As the last of the royal line, Johanna is the only person who can heal a magical breach in the wall that separates her kingdom of Santarem from the land of the Keepers, legendary men and women who wield elemental magic. The barrier protects Santarem from those Keepers who might try to take power over mere humans…Keepers who are determined to stop Johanna and seize the wall’s power for themselves.

And they’re not the only ones. As the duchys of Santarem descend into war over the throne, Johanna relies more than ever on the advice of her handsome companion, Lord Rafael DeSilva. But Rafi is a duke too, and his people come first. As their friendship progresses into the beginnings of a tender relationship, Johanna must wonder: is Rafi looking out for her happiness, or does he want the throne for himself?

With war on the horizon, Johanna and Rafi dodge treacherous dukes and Keeper assassins as they race through the countryside, determined to strengthen the wall before it’s too late… even if it means sacrificing their happiness for the sake of their world.

WhyImWaiting_v2

I absolutely loved The Storyspinner. This is the type of fantasy that I’ve been craving for a long time — one that feels a bit light but doesn’t lack anything with regard to worldbuilding or great characters or FEELS. The world is inspired by Portuguese and Brazilian culture; the characters are MANY and ALL AWESOME; and ohhhhhhhhh my gosh the feels. I’m so excited for The Storyspinner‘s sequel!!

Have you read The Storyspinner? (YOU SHOULD!!)

She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.

Destined to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him...or that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

WhyImWaiting_v2

I’m sorry, what was that? I can’t hear you over the sound of THE FIRST FIVE WORDS OF THAT SYNOPSIS.

She’s more gunpowder than girl?! YES PLEASE. This sounds a bit like a Western crossed with a Middle Eastern-inspired world. Throw in some fantasy elements, a daring escape with a wanted fugitive, and a bit of romance, and I’m 1000% sold.

THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets THE PEAKY BLINDERS in Lee Kelly's new magical realism, crossover novel.

Magic is powerful, dangerous and addictive - and after passage of the 18th Amendment, it is finally illegal.

It's 1926 in Washington, DC, and while Anti-Sorcery activists have achieved the Prohibition of sorcery, the city's magic underworld is booming. Sorcerers cast illusions to aid mobsters' crime sprees. Smugglers funnel magic contraband in from overseas. Gangs have established secret performance venues where patrons can lose themselves in magic, and take a mind-bending, intoxicating elixir known as the sorcerer's shine.

Joan Kendrick, a young sorcerer from Norfolk County, Virginia accepts an offer to work for DC's most notorious crime syndicate, the Shaw Gang, when her family's home is repossessed. Alex Danfrey, a first-year Federal Prohibition Unit trainee with a complicated past and talents of his own, becomes tapped to go undercover and infiltrate the Shaws.

Through different paths, Joan and Alex tread deep into the violent, dangerous world of criminal magic - and when their paths cross at the Shaws' performance venue, despite their orders, and despite themselves, Joan and Alex become enchanted with one another. But when gang alliances begin to shift, the two sorcerers are forced to question their ultimate allegiances and motivations. And soon, Joan and Alex find themselves pitted against each other in a treacherous, heady game of cat-and-mouse.

A CRIMINAL MAGIC casts a spell of magic, high stakes and intrigue against the backdrop of a very different Roaring Twenties.

WhyImWaiting_v2

I’m going to give you a moment to go re-read that synopsis if you skimmed it, because I’ll be honest, the first time I read it I basically forgot everything after “THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets THE PEAKY BLINDERS.”

This book is set in a version of the Roaring Twenties with magic. I repeat, THE ROARING TWENTIES WITH MAGIC. It’s got mobsters and crime syndicates and a girl who works for one of those crime syndicates, and an undercover officer in training who meets said girl and forbidden romance in the roaring twenties with magic.

Can I just… I’ll just be over here in the corner until this one comes out because I don’t know what to do with myself until I can read this book.
