Gabe's life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skiptracer. This already almost-impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first "score,"a young girl who won't speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

Sam didn't think things could get worse at Thurmand rehabilitation camp. Then the Reds arrive. Everyone assumed the kids with firepower had been killed years ago. Instead they were taken away, brainwashed, and returned as terrifyingly effective guards. To her horror, Sam recognizes one of them: Lucas, the one spark of light in Sam's dark childhood.

Lucas has a deadly secret—he beat the brutal training that turned his fellow Reds into mindless drones. When Sam defends herself against an attack by a vile PSF guard and faces a harrowing punishment, Lucas must risk everything to save her.

The government-run "rehabilitation camps" have been shut down, but kids with Psi powers are anything but free. Sam would rather be on her own than put in the care of a foster family and given the "cure"—a dangerous procedure that unclaimed kids across the country are being forced to undergo. But there's more at stake than just her own safety. Sam once made someone a promise, and the time has come to fulfill it.

Now that she's out of her camp, Mia only has one thought in her head: finding Lucas, her beloved older brother. She hasn't seen him since they were separated and taken to different camps years ago, before Mia even became Psi. When Sam, Lucas's childhood best friend, rescues Mia from the government's inept care, Mia learns that nothing is as simple as she thought—and the past that she's so desperate to salvage may not be possible to recover...

Hiatus Announcement + Giveaway!

July 9th – July 31st

I know, I know — I just took a short hiatus a little over a month ago, before/during/and after BEA, thanks to the craziness that surrounded that week… but man it’s hard to catch up after falling behind! After BEA, being super busy with work, then ALA, and now another project I’m currently working on… I’ve been feeling like a bit of a failure at blogging. =S I have no buffer of reviews to post! I haven’t finished a review book in 2-3 weeks! What is happening?!?! Just busyness, and I’ll have more time to do all of that soon. But with the stress I’m feeling, I took a hard look at what I want to be doing, and it’s not “read a book, write a review, post immediately,” which is what I’ve been doing for… well, a while.

So I’ve decided it’s time to put the blog on “pause” for a little bit. I’ve actually been toying with the idea of taking a hiatus for some time, for the sole purpose of getting ahead on my posts and reviews. Part of my stress is the teetering stack of books I want to read/review in the coming months. I can feel them watching me, I swear. And for some reason, right now, I’m more stressed about it all, than I am excited to read them. Which is not okay!!! (And trust me, I know this stress is self-inflicted. That just makes it harder to banish!)  So, I’ve decided to take the breather I need to help me let go, try to get my busyness under control, and try to get ahead, for once, on my blog posts. So…

I’ll be taking a break from posting here until the end of July.

I’ll still be on Twitter, Instagram, Goodreads, etc, so I’m not going totally dark! I just want to use this time to read lots of books and write lots of reviews and posts, and not worry about posting them until I’m back, so I can schedule out a few weeks in advance. :)

BUT I don’t want to go away for any length of time without doing something fun for you all, who are so wonderful to stick around and put up with me. ;)

So, I mentioned how I’ve been getting stressed about upcoming review books… Yeah, yeah, I hear you being all, “WHY, Nikki?! You should just be excited!!” and I know that, I really do, so I wanted to take this time to feature some of the upcoming Fall/Winter (but not necessarily review-) books that I truly am over-the-moon-excited about…

…And I also want to give away a preorder of a Fall/Winter book YOU are excited about!!

So here are some books that I am DYING FOR AND I CANNOT WAIT TO READ THEM (also some ideas for the giveaway-winner’s book of choice? It’s up to you!)…

I still left off a TON of books I’m excited about in addition to these — if I hadn’t cut myself off though, this post would end up being a giant wall of book covers. But I think that covers at least 1 book per month from September through March! Are we excited yet?!

What books are YOU most looking forward to this fall/winter??

I really want to hear what everyone is most excited about reading, what they’ve maybe already preordered(???), and what they’d choose to preorder if they win! Just fill out the Rafflecopter below and be sure to fill in the “commented” entry if you leave a comment!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

This giveaway is for 1 fall/winter preorder of $17 or less, and is open to international entries if The Book Depository ships to you. If the book you want isn’t available for preorder yet, that’s fine! I can order it when it shows up.

♥ See you back here in August! ♥

Birthday Giveaway! (INTL)

So, it’s my birthday today… Another year older! Honestly, I’m not really sure how I feel about turning 27. It’s sort of a non-event, I guess? *shrugs* I’m not someone who gets overly worked up about birthdays, really. I don’t feel any different today than I did yesterday. But I suppose this is as good an excuse as any for a little celebration… So! :D

I haven’t done an INTL giveaway on the blog in a while (not one that I’ve sponsored myself, anyway), so today I wanted to do something to say “thanks” to ALL my readers — not just the ones who live within an affordable-shipping-distance. ;)

Fill out the Rafflecopter below to enter! Here are the rules:

  • The winner can choose any book from The Book Depository up to $15
  • I will make an exception for a $15+ book from TBD if I’ve reviewed it and given it a 4-5-star rating! (Basically I just want to be able to gift you a book I really loved even if it might be a bit more than $15)
  • For extra entries, if I have reviewed a book you want (no matter the rating), leave a comment on that review, and be sure to fill out the appropriate Rafflecopter option below! (I won’t force you to stick to this choice if you change your mind later, though.)
  • Preorders are a-okay, as well!

Here are some ideas in case any of these books tickle your fancy! ;)

Blog Tour: A Darker Shade of Magic + Giveaway!

A Darker Shade of Magic Blog Tour

Welcome to White London…

…and to my stop on V.E. Schwab’s Digital Londons blog tour! I’m so excited to be involved in this tour, and to have Victoria on the blog today to share a little bit about her INCREDIBLE new book, A Darker Shade of Magic!

TWBI-quoteIf you follow me on Twitter, you know I haven’t been able to stop talking about this book since I read it, and for good reason. It contains everything I want from a great fantasy book — excellent worldbuilding, an amazing magic system, incredible characters… and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final page.

And if that’s not enough for you, it’s also got a wannabe pirate, a magic boy with a magical many-sided coat, and multiple Londons… Yes, Londons. If you want to learn more about them, click around on, or take this super fun quiz to find out which London you belong in! I am apparently from Red London, FYI — so I’m assuming, since this blog-tour stop happens to be in White London, that I must have the ability travel between them…? I’m gonna go with yes. ;)

Anyway, there’s tons more fun on this tour stop, below — Victoria shares a little bit about her worldbuilding process (so cool!!) and there’s also an international giveaway! So stick around!

There Were Books Involved turns TWO! \O/

…And I am completely lost for words. O_O I… what… how?!

I thought my first year of blogging passed quickly, but holy crap, this second year flew by even faster. I am a bit lost for words, but I do need to say one thing, and that is — thank you.

I recently passed a couple milestones (2,000 followers on Twitter and 1,000 on Bloglovin) and I’m still feeling a bit “I SHOULD NEVER TWEET/POST AGAIN THERE ARE TOO MANY OF YOU”… O_O But while it’s true that those numbers boggle my mind and I sometimes wonder why you all stick around, it’s also a really good feeling to know that people are sticking around. ♥

I’ve been so lucky to have made some truly amazing friends during these past two years, and I’ve loved having TWBI as an outlet for all my bookish feels, for discussions, for ranting and raving — those things have made the past two years so wonderful, and so worth it. This community has its ups and downs, and I’ve been feeling some of those downs a bit more than usual lately, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been more committed to blogging than I am now, with two years behind me. I feel more confident, not only as a blogger but as a person, and I know I owe a lot of that to this community. And I’m so, so grateful.

I keep meeting more and more awesome people through blogging, and I just want you all to know: I truly value each and every one of you. Blog readers, commenters, twitter friends new and old, IRL bloggy friends, BFF’s — just, kindred spirits — I am so grateful for you all.

I wish I could think of a way to show my gratitude, other than inventing teleportation so I can hug all of you, so I guess I’m going to have to settle with giving away some stuff instead. ;)

So, without further ado… the reason anyone has read this far in the post… Haha, jk… no but really…

A Darker Shade of Magic
Shades of Magic #1

Written by: Victoria Schwab

Release date: February 24th 2015
Genres: Adult, Fantasy
Pages: 400

Kell is one of the last travelers—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes connected by one magical city.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad king—George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered—and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London—a place where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cutpurse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

There’s this feeling I sometimes get after finishing a book — it’s extremely rare, and only happens when the book was a whole other level of intense and amazing. It’s this euphoric, wrung-out, disoriented stupor, and it leaves you speechless and reeling.

Well, I got that feeling after finishing A Darker Shade of Magic. And that’s the highest praise I can give.

Victoria Schwab originally teased A Darker Shade of Magic as “pirates, thieves, and sadist kings.” If you’re any sort of fan of her work, and she throws those words at you, you’re a goner. But then you read the synopsis (Schwab-fan or not), and you sort of side-eye it. How is this possible? This book seems to have way too much going for it, way too many good things in it — How? Why? What’s going on? Is this for real?!

Well, before you get too excited, let me just make it clear how many good things there are in this book, because the synopsis actually doesn’t cover it.

  • (Aspiring) pirate ✓
  • Thieves ✓
  • Sadist kings ✓✓
  • Amazing magic system(s) ✓✓✓
  • Flawless worldbuilding ✓✓✓✓
  • London(s) ✓✓✓✓
  • Fabulous magical coats ✓
  • Incredible characters ✓✓✓✓
  • Amazing friendships/brOTP’s/nemeses ✓✓✓✓✓
  • Ship potential (no insta-anything) ✓!!!
  • Banter ✓!!!!!!!
  • FEELS ✓✓✓✓✓✓!!!!!!!

Yep, your eyes do not deceive you. A Darker Shade of Magic ticks ALL THE BOXES — and revels in it.

A Darker Shade of Magic does with the fantasy genre what Vicious did with superheroes. It takes things we’ve seen before — magic, evil tyrants, world(s)-in-danger, etc — and turns them upside-down. Raises the stakes. Makes them new. This is fantasy at its finest — and Victoria Schwab at her best — and it is not to be missed.
