Summer Lovin’ Read-a-Thon: Day 1

Format: select

SummerLovinBadge2Class Orientation

Hey Guys! I hope you’re all ready for this week’s Summer Lovin’ Read-a-Thon… I know I am! I’ve never done a read-a-thon before – this is my first!

For those of you who don’t know, Summer Lovin’ runs from July 1-7. This is a no-pressure Read-a-Thon – the point is to have fun and to tackle your summer TBR list. Set your own goals and enjoy participating in posts, challenges, and giveaways! It will all culminate in a 24-hr marathon read-a-thon, from Saturday July 6th at 10am EST, to Sunday July 7th at 10am EST. Sign ups are open through July 6th!

Today is Day One of the read-a-thon, and the topic is “Class Orientation”. So let’s get this party started!

A little about me…

My name is Nikki, I’m 25, and I’m blogging from Seattle, WA. Living in Seattle can be rainy, but it is currently GORGEOUS weather outside, so I can’t wait to take advantage of it, and get some sun while I’m reading this week. I’m definitely glad that the weather is cooperating for Summer Lovin’! ;) And one other major event is happening in Seattle this week (Tuesday, actually)… I’ll get to that in a bit. ;D

I’ve always loved reading, since I was really little, but I’ve only recently started blogging (as of March 4 of this year). I got into blogging because I really wanted my own space to reflect on the books I liked, and from what I’d seen of the blogging community, you all just looked like my people. ;) So here I am! And it’s been so much fun getting to know other bloggers, whether they share my tastes or not. This is such a diverse and awesome community. Personally, my favorite genres are (all YA) scifi/fantasy, contemporary, paranormal, dystopian, post-apocalyptic… Yeah, I’m all over the place, lol.

My reading selection…

I work full-time, so having to work during the read-a-thon is kind of a bummer… BUT, thank goodness, I get a four-day 4th of July weekend, yay! So despite my probably-slow first days, I’m seriously excited to fill this week with as many summery reads as I can.

Below is a list of the books I’m eying for the read-a-thon this week. There’s no way I’ll read them all, but I’m a serious mood-reader, so if I don’t have a lot to choose from, I’m going to have a problem, lol. First I’m going to finish the book I’m currently reading: In Your Dreams, by Amy Martin, which I will probably finish tonight. Then, I want to read at least 4 other books for the read-a-thon (trying to one-up my average of 3 books per week), so the first row are my serious goal-books – including my first Sarah Dessen!! The second row are books I will use as either A) backup, if for some crazy reason I want to swap them for any of the first four, or B) unrealistic extras, if by some miracle I end up finishing four books and need more.

So that’s that! I think I’ve got a pretty good selection, what does everyone else think?? :D

The excitement continues…

Finally, I’m FLIPPING OUT WITH EXCITEMENT about this week because not only is it Summer Lovin’, but I’m going to see Neil Gaiman on Tuesday!!! Last Wednesday, I snagged one of the last tickets to the Seattle Ocean at the End of the Lane event/signing, and I am beyond excited. I’m a huge Neil Gaiman fan (I haven’t read all his books, but Neverwhere, Stardust, and The Graveyard Book are favorites, plus he wrote a couple episodes of my favorite show, Doctor Who). I am so excited to hear him read from his new book, and to get my copy signed. :D I’ll be posting photos to Twitter and Instagram, so be sure to follow me there if you’re not already!

This is gearing up to be an AWESOME week, and I couldn’t be more excited! Let’s do this!

Challenge 1: Teaser Tidbits

The first challenge for this read-a-thon is to post a “Teaser Tidbit”

  • Grab the book you’re currently reading (or recently read)
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page  NO spoilers allowed! Choose passages void of spoilers. The goal is to entice, yet not ruin the book for others!
  • Share the title & author, so that other participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser comes from… In Your Dreams, by Amy Martin, which I’m currently reading. I’m reading the eBook, so to find a “random” page I held the “back” button on my e-reader and counted for a while until I randomly stopped on a page I’d read before. No way was I going to flip forward and possibly spoil myself! lol ;) So here’s a couple sentences from that page.

My eyes flutter open to find his eyes closed[…].

“Kieran, wake up,” I whisper, shaking his shoulder as footsteps get louder on the stairs. “Oh, God – come on…”

– page 98, In Your Dreams eBook

Bwahahaha. I love this moment because it sounds sinister… And I’m not going to say whether it really is or not. No spoilers! Like I said, I’m not finished with it yet, but it’s quite good so far. Check it out on Goodreads if you’re a fan of YA paranormal romance!

  5. Hi there! :)

You’ve got some very interesting books lined up. From what you’ve listed, *my* top pick would be Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour. That book was just awesome! My friend Kate is sitting here and going “OMG, Of Poseidon! Yes!” so I suppose we’re recommending that, too. :)

Anyway, happy reading and have a great week. :)

  6. Another scifi and fantasy fan? Yay! :D This is my first read-a-thon too and I’m super excited for this. I smiled when I saw The Truth About Forever on your list because it was my first Sarah Dessen too! Half of the books I have for this read-a-thon are by her. :D I smiled AGAIN when I saw that your teaser tidbit was from In Your Dreams because I finished that book pretty recently. Happy reading!

  7. You have to tell me what you think of Wanderlove when you finish it! I’ve had my eye on it forever but you know how I feel about contemporary. :-/

    Enjoy the read-a-thon!!

  8. You picked the best Sarah Dessen book to start with! The Truth About Forever is my favourite one and seems to be a lot of peoples favourite Sarah Dessen book. Amy & Roger is fantastic too!
Have fun at the Neil Gaiman event & Good luck with your goals! You’ve got some amazing books on your list :)

    • lol I know it… the first four are my real goal-book, though – the rest are just backup. ;D I just started Meant to Be and really like it so far! :D

    • Ahahaha. You’ll just have to read it to find out what happens! I actually really liked the book. :D

Thanks Asti! Will be sure to post lots of pics from the event tomorrow. ;)

  9. I’ll LOVE to train weathers with you; NYC has been raining all week so far and it looks like it’ll be raining constantly all the way into Sunday. ):
OMG, Neil Gailman!! Have tons of fun and take lots of pictures! :D
As for your TBR list, make sure you read My Life Next Door; it is so, so, SO good. And Of Poseidon is hilarious and refreshing – Emma’s voice is so entertaining.
    Happy readathon! (:

  10. I am green with envy that you can enjoy the sun while reading. It will be months before I can do that again. Dang it is hot in the south…and humid.
Looks like a great lineup of books. You have a couple that I would like to read. Wanderlove was not a favorite of mine, for sure, but it was well recieved by a number of people, so I hope you love it. Best of luck with your goals.

  11. I HIGHLY recommend The Truth About Forever. Sigh. Just thinking about Wes makes my heart pitter patter. And if you haven’t read it I recommend Morgan Matson’s second book Second Chance Summer. All sorts of moving. You have a great list here for sure. I’ve read 6 of the 8 and they are fantastic.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and voting in my little pole.

  12. I love Sarah Dessen. I got a chance to meet her at a conference when I was a school librarian. Your book sounds really thrilling. Congrats on getting to meet Neil Gaiman. I will have to read up on him; so I am already accomplishing one of major goals for the reading-a-thon, learning about new (for me anyway) authors. ;)

  13. Thanks so much for stopping by today at Love.Life.Read! I am so glad that you are able to participate in Summer Lovin’. I am like you with having to work leading up to the long holiday weekend so I will be reading of an evening. :) Great titles on your TBR list–I have Of Poseidon and Of Triton starring at me longingly from my shelf. I may end up reading them later in the week. :)

Love the Teaser Tidbits!! Thanks for participating in Summer Lovin’ with us!!

  14. Great list of books, I’m sure you won’t have a problem with choice :D

Neil Gaiman…OMG I’m so envious! Take photos and blog about the event!!!

Your very lucky that this is your first read-a-thon because this has to be one of the best one I’ve participated in, I just love the activities to help the participants interact with each other. Most read-a-thons have a few challenges and a Twitter chat but no Participation posts or featured Authors, so the Pink Ladies really did a lot of hard work to make Summer Lovin fun, fun, fun!
