* Some spoilers for Book 1, The Storyspinner, in synopsis! *

Johanna and Rafi are in a race against time to save their country before a power-mad Keeper destroys everything they hold dear in the “enthralling magical world” (Cinda Williams Chima, author of The Heir Chronicles) introduced in The Storyspinner.

As the last of the royal line, Johanna is the only person who can heal a magical breach in the wall that separates her kingdom of Santarem from the land of the Keepers, legendary men and women who wield elemental magic. The barrier protects Santarem from those Keepers who might try to take power over mere humans…Keepers who are determined to stop Johanna and seize the wall’s power for themselves.

And they’re not the only ones. As the duchys of Santarem descend into war over the throne, Johanna relies more than ever on the advice of her handsome companion, Lord Rafael DeSilva. But Rafi is a duke too, and his people come first. As their friendship progresses into the beginnings of a tender relationship, Johanna must wonder: is Rafi looking out for her happiness, or does he want the throne for himself?

With war on the horizon, Johanna and Rafi dodge treacherous dukes and Keeper assassins as they race through the countryside, determined to strengthen the wall before it’s too late… even if it means sacrificing their happiness for the sake of their world.

WhyImWaiting_v2

I absolutely loved The Storyspinner. This is the type of fantasy that I’ve been craving for a long time — one that feels a bit light but doesn’t lack anything with regard to worldbuilding or great characters or FEELS. The world is inspired by Portuguese and Brazilian culture; the characters are MANY and ALL AWESOME; and ohhhhhhhhh my gosh the feels. I’m so excited for The Storyspinner‘s sequel!!

Have you read The Storyspinner? (YOU SHOULD!!)

THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets THE PEAKY BLINDERS in Lee Kelly's new magical realism, crossover novel.

Magic is powerful, dangerous and addictive - and after passage of the 18th Amendment, it is finally illegal.

It's 1926 in Washington, DC, and while Anti-Sorcery activists have achieved the Prohibition of sorcery, the city's magic underworld is booming. Sorcerers cast illusions to aid mobsters' crime sprees. Smugglers funnel magic contraband in from overseas. Gangs have established secret performance venues where patrons can lose themselves in magic, and take a mind-bending, intoxicating elixir known as the sorcerer's shine.

Joan Kendrick, a young sorcerer from Norfolk County, Virginia accepts an offer to work for DC's most notorious crime syndicate, the Shaw Gang, when her family's home is repossessed. Alex Danfrey, a first-year Federal Prohibition Unit trainee with a complicated past and talents of his own, becomes tapped to go undercover and infiltrate the Shaws.

Through different paths, Joan and Alex tread deep into the violent, dangerous world of criminal magic - and when their paths cross at the Shaws' performance venue, despite their orders, and despite themselves, Joan and Alex become enchanted with one another. But when gang alliances begin to shift, the two sorcerers are forced to question their ultimate allegiances and motivations. And soon, Joan and Alex find themselves pitted against each other in a treacherous, heady game of cat-and-mouse.

A CRIMINAL MAGIC casts a spell of magic, high stakes and intrigue against the backdrop of a very different Roaring Twenties.

WhyImWaiting_v2

I’m going to give you a moment to go re-read that synopsis if you skimmed it, because I’ll be honest, the first time I read it I basically forgot everything after “THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets THE PEAKY BLINDERS.”

This book is set in a version of the Roaring Twenties with magic. I repeat, THE ROARING TWENTIES WITH MAGIC. It’s got mobsters and crime syndicates and a girl who works for one of those crime syndicates, and an undercover officer in training who meets said girl and forbidden romance in the roaring twenties with magic.

Can I just… I’ll just be over here in the corner until this one comes out because I don’t know what to do with myself until I can read this book.

A world battered by climate shift and war turns to an ancient method of keeping peace: the exchange of hostages. The Children of Peace - sons and daughters of kings and presidents and generals - are raised together in small, isolated schools called Preceptures. There, they learn history and political theory, and are taught to gracefully accept what may well be their fate: to die if their countries declare war.

Greta Gustafsen Stuart, Duchess of Halifax and Crown Princess of the Pan-Polar Confederation, is the pride of the North American Precepture. Learned and disciplined, Greta is proud of her role in keeping the global peace, even though, with her country controlling two-thirds of the world’s most war-worthy resource — water — she has little chance of reaching adulthood alive.

Enter Elián Palnik, the Precepture’s newest hostage and biggest problem. Greta’s world begins to tilt the moment she sees Elián dragged into the school in chains. The Precepture’s insidious surveillance, its small punishments and rewards, can make no dent in Elián, who is not interested in dignity and tradition, and doesn’t even accept the right of the UN to keep hostages.

What will happen to Elián and Greta as their two nations inch closer to war?

MyThoughts_v2

The Scorpion Rules was… something. And when I say ‘something,’ I mean a few things.

  1. It has substance.
  2. It was absolutely not what I was expecting.
  3. It’s a little odd — in a good way.

This is one of those books where the blurb cannot go into the actual details of the story because holy freaking spoilers, Batman!!! That blurb (and I) cannot mention half of the awesome stuff that is present in this book because it would absolutely spoil huge elements of the plot.

That being said, I do want to talk about the three points above.

In this action-packed, high-octane debut, the closeted son of an ultra-conservative president must keep a budding romance secret from his father while protecting himself from a sentient computer program that's terrorizing the United States—and has zeroed in on him as its next target.

In the near future, scientists create what may be a new form of life: an artificial human named Charlotte. All goes well until Charlotte escapes, transfers her consciousness to the Internet, and begins terrorizing the American public.

Charlotte's attacks have everyone on high alert—everyone except Lee Fisher, the closeted son of the US president. Lee has other things to worry about, like keeping his Secret Service detail from finding out about his crush on Nico, the eccentric, Shakespeare-obsessed new boy at school. And keeping Nico from finding out about his recent suicide attempt. And keeping himself from freaking out about all his secrets.

But when attacks start happening at his school, Lee realizes he's Charlotte's next target. Even worse, Nico may be part of Charlotte's plan too.

As Lee races to save himself, uncover Charlotte's plan, and figure out if he can trust Nico, he comes to a whole new understanding of what it means to be alive... and what makes life worth living.

MyThoughts_v2

I have very mixed feelings about Willful Machines. On the one hand, there were parts that I loved and that I think were really, really strong; and on the other… there were parts that I definitely did not love. Unfortunately, the parts I loved were in the beginning, and the rest were at the end, so ultimately… I’m left feeling rather disappointed.

Most of my positive feelings stem from the fact that the first half (ish) of this book reads like a slightly-futuristic contemporary with a dash of sci-fi, which I adored. There were great characters, a great friendship, a super cute crush, and some ominous plot-related tension. The first half was really, solidly good.

Sixteen-year-old Elli was a small child when the Elders of Kupari chose her to succeed the Valtia, the queen who wields infinitely powerful ice and fire magic. Since then, Elli has lived in the temple, surrounded by luxury and tutored by magical priests, as she prepares for the day when the Valtia perishes and the magic finds a new home in her. Elli is destined to be the most powerful Valtia to ever rule.

But when the queen dies defending the kingdom from invading warriors, the magic doesn’t enter Elli. It’s nowhere to be found.

Disgraced, Elli flees to the outlands, the home of banished criminals—some who would love to see the temple burn with all its priests inside. As she finds her footing in this new world, Elli uncovers devastating new information about the Kupari magic, those who wield it, and the prophecy that foretold her destiny. Torn between the love she has for her people and her growing loyalty to the banished, Elli struggles to understand the true role she was meant to play. But as war looms, she must align with the right side—before the kingdom and its magic are completely destroyed.

WhyImWaiting_v2

I love Sarah Fine’s books, and this one sounds SO GOOD. First off — yes please to the ice & fire magic. Secondly — this kingdom is ruled by a queen who goes off and fights to defend her kingdom. HECK YES. And finally, I am a big fan of this whole type of situation: Torn between the love she has for her people and her growing loyalty to the banished… I am not sure if this series will have any romance (my guess is, hopefully, yes? Sarah’s romances are always so good!), but regardless, I am absolutely not going to miss it.

Blackbeard the pirate was known for striking fear in the hearts of the bravest of sailors. But once he was just a young man who dreamed of leaving his rigid life behind to chase adventure in faraway lands. Nothing could stop him—until he met the one girl who would change everything. This is their story.

Edward "Teach" Drummond, son of one of Bristol's richest merchants, has just returned from a year-long journey on the high seas to find his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and sick of the high society he was born into, Teach dreams only of returning to the vast ocean he’d begun to call home. There's just one problem: convincing his father to let him leave and never come back.

Following her parents' deaths, Anne Barrett is left penniless and soon to be homeless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne is forced to take a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks, and Anne longs for escape. How will she ever realize her dream of sailing to Curaçao—where her mother was born—when she's stuck in England?

From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn to each other, they’re trapped by society and their own circumstances. Faced with an impossible choice, they must decide to chase their dreams and go, or follow their hearts and stay.

WhyImWaiting_v2

PIRATES. BLACKBEARD’S ORIGIN STORY. NAUTICAL STUFFFFF. A (I’m pretty sure doomed) ROMANCE. YES. ALL OF THE YES.

There’s literally nothing in that synopsis that doesn’t sound amazing to me. I can’t even handle it. I’m super picky about which historical fiction-type books I pick up, but this one — because it deals with pirates, which is a huge plus in my book — is one I absolutely cannot miss. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be full of feels, and I can’t wait to read it!!
