Way of Kings Readalong – Week 6 (chapters 33-42)

WayOfKingsReadAlong

It’s week 6 of the epic Way of Kings read-along, hosted by Nrlymrtl from Dab of Darkness and Anya from On Starships and Dragonwings! Every week has covered a different section of this massive (no really, it’s massive) book, and this week we’ve finally officially passed the halfway point!

This week was also my turn to come up with questions for the latest section, chapters 33-42. Which was just in the nick of time, because I have been a failure at participating so far… :( But this week I’ve gotten my butt in gear, and I’m so excited to discuss this section!

Additionally, at the end of this post is a massive Way of Kings/Words of Radiance giveaway! 10 copies of The Way of Kings and 10 copies of Words of Radiance for US/Canada residents, plus 2 copies of each book for international readers (via TBD). Check it out!!

But as usual, if you haven’t read through chapter 42 of Way of Kings, huge spoilers below

Summer Lovin’ Read-a-Thon: Day 7

Format: select

SummerLovinBadge2Summer Lovin’ runs from July 1-7. This is a no-pressure Read-a-Thon – the point is to have fun and to tackle your summer TBR list. Set your own goals and enjoy participating in posts, challenges, and giveaways! It will all culminate in a 24-hr marathon read-a-thon, from Saturday July 6th at 10am EST, to Sunday July 7th at 10am EST.

Today is the last day of the Read-a-Thon, and today’s discussion topic is…

Alma Mater

You are graduating today–list your accomplishments big and small for the week. Hop around and congratulate all of your friends on their accomplishments.

WE MADE IT, GUYS!!! Well, at least, we’re almost there. Because it’s 9pm PST on Saturday night, and there’s still 10 hours of the Greased Lightnin’ marathon read-a-thon left! And then 14 hours of the regular read-a-thon left after that! But we’re so close.

My rough plan for the read-a-thon was to, first, finish the book I was reading (done), finish three books during the week (done), and then read my first Sarah Dessen book for the 24-hr Greased Lightnin’ marathon read-a-thon… I’m currently SUPER close to finishing The Truth About Forever, so my final goal will definitely be accomplished as well! DONE! I’ve officially finished The Truth About Forever, and have moved on to Golden, by Jessi Kirby. We’ll see how far I get, but at this point, it’s just icing on the cake!

I’m so excited that this was my first read-a-thon! I set goals for myself that I thought were a bit of a reach, and then I accomplished them with a little time to spare. :D

More than anything though, this week has just been a blast. I’ve loved participating in the daily posts and challenges (even though I let day 6 slide… oops… I WAS BUSY READING OKAY), and making new blogger friends via the participation posts and Twitter! I can honestly say that, as my first read-a-thon experience, Summer Lovin’ has made me want to get involved in even more read-a-thons in the future. Thank you SO MUCH to the hosts – Oh, Chrys!, Tumbling Books, Effortlessly Reading, Love Life Read, Shelf Addiction, Read Sleep Repeat, and Reviewing Wonderland – you all put together a seriously fun week!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!

Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin On

Let’s do book shimmies! We made it through the week-long part of the read-a-thon!!! Congratulate yourself and your new bookish friends on their progress so far. Did you get as much read as you wanted to so far? Have you changed your goals for the 24-hr marathon read?

Really, since this post is going up on Thursday night, there’s still a full day ahead of us. *phew!* So even though I feel like I’m a little behind, it’s totally okay, because Friday hasn’t even begun (or is just beginning) for most of us. I’m totally doing okay. Really! …She says, as she frantically types this post so she can get back to reading as fast as her eyes will let her. ;)

Completed & In Progress…

Tears on My Pillow

Share a quote from your current read or tell us about a book that really pulled on your heart strings. What was it about that book/quote that made you cry?

Okay so, this isn’t something that made me cry, but it’s definitely something that pulled on my heart strings. I‘m currently reading just finished Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill. Julie is the main character, and her dad died when she was 7. She is currently in England for a school trip with her class, and during this trip, she’s been reflecting on her dad – and her mom – a lot, because they spent their honeymoon in England. This passage is from when Julie and her class visit Stratford-upon-Avon.

As we walk, I peer down side streets, hoping I might catch a glimpse of the tiny antique shop my mom has been describing to me forever. I must have heard the story a million times. Mom and Dad didn’t get rings when they first got married, since Dad had just joined the marines and they were dirt-poor. They were wandering around the tiny town, no maps, playing “which way does this road go?” on the twisty streets. They came upon a tiny secondhand shop, where they found matching gold bands. Mom said it was a sign that they were on the right path. Neither ring needed to be sized a bit; they fit perfectly. They look like the gold was hand-molded, with little bumps and imperfections all around. Dad always liked to show me how Mom’s ring fit right down into his. Now both rings live in my mom’s jewelry box, nestled in the blue velvet, her ring tucked inside his.

Meant to Be, by Lauren Morrill, pg 185

That last sentence… how the rings now live in the jewelery box, one inside the other… Gah. I just found that to be such a vivid and bittersweet image.

Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee

Introduce us to your favorite fictional female.

Ladies and gents, it is my pleasure to introduce you to…

MistbornCover-Vin

Mistborn cover art by Sam Weber

Vin
from Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn trilogy

Vin was a thief who grew up on the streets of Luthadel, a dark and unforgiving city for anyone, let alone a young girl. Orphaned when she was a child, and abandoned by her brother, she made her way by joining different thieving crews, keeping her head down, trusting no one, and relying on her quick wits and luck to keep her (relatively) safe. Vin is eventually found by Kelsier, another thief who asks her to join a different crew, unlike any she’s ever known. With them, she finally learns the meaning of friendship and trust – all while playing a pivotal role in Kelsier’s plan to overthrow the corrupt ruler of their world.

I love Vin because whatever way you look at it, she was always an incredibly strong character. She started out as a “nobody” thief, living on the streets, but of course that took serious strength. When she finds herself a part of Kelsier’s crew, asked to truly trust people for the first time in her life, and to act for the good of others rather than herself, she’s wary, and it takes her a long time to finally open up. But her character growth is huge – Vin becomes even stronger and more confident in her skills and in herself. She goes through some incredibly difficult things, and is given a lot of serious responsibility – for others’ lives as well as her own. But she faces everything head-on. She’s just a fascinating character to watch throughout this series and I LOVE HER TO DEATH OKAY?

Just read these books if you haven’t, seriously. Vin’s not the only awesome character – I actually can’t even say there are “minor” characters in these books, because every single one is real and fully developed and gives me ALL THE FEELS. Ugh. But especially Vin.

PS: Honorable Mentions for my Favorite Fictional Female are: Alina from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy, Scout from Tammy Blackwell’s Timber Wolves trilogy, Deryn Sharp from Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan trilogy, Annabeth Chase from Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series, Tris from Divergent, Puck from The Scorpio Races, Mackenzie from The Archived, Rory from Shades of London, and Cassie from The 5th Wave.

You’re the One That I Want

List your must-have summer reading (the ones you read over and over again) or give us some of your favorite recommended summer reads.

I’m dividing this topic into two sections…

1) Recommended Summer Reading

These are some lighter, what-I-consider summery reads, which I would totally consider re-reading if I had the time (darn you, Goodreads and my mile-long TBR list!!). Definitely check these out if you haven’t read them! (Especially The Art of Wishing – that book needs more love, it is ADORABLE.)

2) My Highly-Anticipated Summer Releases

I’d also like to take this opportunity to list the not-yet-released summer reads that I’m most looking forward to! Since summer officially ends on September 21st, these all come out between now and then, and I am SUPER EXCITED for all of them!

I hope everyone has these on their TBR lists, because they all look like they’re going to be AMAZING!
